Invitación a la exposición “El Rarismo fotográfico de Manuel Álvarez Bravo.”

It is quite common for the work of Manuel Álvarez Bravo to be associated with Surrealism, yet he used to state that his only surrealist photograph was The Good Reputation Sleeping (La buena fama durmiendo), made in 1938 at the request of André Breton.

Don Manuel maintained that a work of art is made up of influences, and he did not hesitate to point out those that inspired him most, such as the Cubism of Pablo Picasso. He related part of his work to the “fantastic,” since “objective” reality lends itself to multiple ways of seeing.

This exhibition is composed largely of vintage prints—works that are rare both for their subjects and for their unique prints—with a majority of photomontages made by the photographer himself. It brings together well-known works alongside unpublished or forgotten pieces, experiments from works in progress, and reveals the surprising contemporaneity of this centenarian photographer.

Here we celebrate twenty years of work by the Manuel Álvarez Bravo Archive, a living archive that helps demonstrate why Álvarez Bravo is a pioneer of modern Mexican photography and occupies an indisputable place within the international avant-gardes of photography.

The exhibition “The Photographic Bizarrism of Manuel Álvarez Bravo” opened last Saturday, September 6, 2025, at Casa MAB, and will be open to the public from September 2025 through January 2026.
